I have the privilege of participating in an annual review at my university. It’s stressful, of course, but incredibly rewarding. I get to compile a list of all of the “professional” stuff I do each year, and it’s really just a supportive conversation about goals and personal growth.  There’s that voice nagging at me, though. I don’t know about you, but I get hit […]

I finished a new essay the other night. Writing it was more of a struggle than usual, and I felt myself reaching to find the descriptions that usually come easy to me. The musicality of the sentences wasn’t there. The whole thing felt like a mess, really, and a poor reflection of what I know I can do. Needless to say, this bummed me […]

I mentioned this recently, but the National Poetry Month 30/30 project I participated in was the first time in a while that I’ve committed to something daily. Full Sail University provides faculty with the unique opportunity to present courses on whatever we want. Yes, it’s more complicated than that, but when you get down to it, if you love something enough, you can teach it, and they let us. If you know me you know I need an environment like this in my life forever. Taking advantage of this, in February […]

I’m about to submit my nonfiction manuscript for the first time, and the experience is definitely shining a light on gaps in my knowledge. I’m very comfortable with the idea of my work being out in the world, even my nonfiction, so that isn’t the part that induces hesitation. It’s that this is unfamiliar territory for me. I know that the manuscript is ready. […]

A couple of months ago I had the privilege of being interviewed by a student I’ve never taught for a class project. We spent a long Sunday afternoon on campus getting to know one another, filling the empty space with excited chattering that got progressively louder as the hours passed. Eventually, we got to the interview questions, which were brilliant. I’m including some short […]
