I have the privilege of participating in an annual review at my university. It’s stressful, of course, but incredibly rewarding. I get to compile a list of all of the “professional” stuff I do each year, and it’s really just a supportive conversation about goals and personal growth.  There’s that voice nagging at me, though. I don’t know about you, but I get hit […]

Today I jumped over some huge hurdles in my profession: I completed a revised query letter and chapter synopsis for my memoir. I learned a little about these topics in graduate school, and between that, my own research, and the collaboration of an amazing colleague, have been presenting on these topics often. Having the knowledge didn’t equate to completing the work in this case, though. I haven’t submitted to any […]

I mentioned this recently, but the National Poetry Month 30/30 project I participated in was the first time in a while that I’ve committed to something daily. I wrote every day, which is something my graduate school self would have never believed. In this month without a post, I’ve been quiet, but not silent. In honor of National Poetry Month, I’ve been participating in the Sundress Publications NaPoWriMo! 30/30 project. In case you’re confused by the lingo (I was), this means I was tasked with writing 30 poems in 30 days, and posting my attempts for all to see.  You can view this work here for another few […]

Update: manuscript submissions are no longer unfamiliar territory. In the last couple of weeks, between two chapbooks and a nonfiction manuscript, I’ve sent out over fifty submissions. This has been time-consuming and expensive, but so worth it. So far, I’ve had a pair of collaborative poems picked up by Menacing Hedge. I’ll link when they become available in April. I’ll say this, though: for […]

Recently, I flew to Illinois with the intention of making some art and finishing the last few poems in a collaborative chapbook project a friend and I have been working on. Those objectives were completed, of course, and now that I’m home we’re moving on to the revision phase of this together. The experience has been interesting; to paraphrase him (in his fashion, he […]

I’m about to submit my nonfiction manuscript for the first time, and the experience is definitely shining a light on gaps in my knowledge. I’m very comfortable with the idea of my work being out in the world, even my nonfiction, so that isn’t the part that induces hesitation. It’s that this is unfamiliar territory for me. I know that the manuscript is ready. […]
